Channel 4 launch 4OD iPad app for on-the-go streaming

Channel 4 follow BBC with iPad catch up app
Channel 4 has followed in the footsteps of its BBC branded competitor and launched an iPad app for its on-demand streaming service, 4oD.

Attempting to emulate the success of the BBC’s iPlayer app, Channel 4 has launched 4oD Catch Up, an ad-funded iPad specific app that will allow users to access, browse and stream a selection of the service on-demand video content.
"Collectively, connected TV is an interesting opportunity and in aggregation is a significant market, but at the moment it's all pretty fragmented,” announced Channel 4’s head of Video on Demand, Sarah Milton at the launch of the new iPad application. She added: "There's little in the way of consistent formats and we need some degree of scalability and longevity. The manufacturers are also continually developing new versions of their products."

With the 4oD service now firmly footed on Apple’s market dominating tablet, focus shifts to future outlets for the catch up service with Microsoft’t Xbox Live platform a reported front runner.

"It is taking a progressive view and opening up the platform to a number of people," stated an anonymous insider at the public service broadcaster.

"Broadcasters are interested in securing a presence on Xbox because they have all seen how well Sky has done from the distribution deal. And there has been an internal shift to making it easier for them to get onto the platform."
